Angelina Jolie, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, spent the day in Thailand listening to refugees talk about their struggles -- now she is calling on the Thai government to help Myanmar refugee camps become "self reliant," UNHCR reports. The 111,000 refugees live in camps in northern Thailand and are not allowed to work outside the camps or receive a higher education. The camp currently houses 18,111 registered refugees, all of whom aren't allowed to leave for proper schooling or work.
Angelina Jolie said, "I was saddened to meet a 21-year-old woman who was born in a refugee camp, who has never even been out of the camp and is now raising her own child in a camp. With no foreseeable chance that these refugees will soon be able to return to Burma (Myanmar), we must find some way to help them work and become self reliant" .
